But what about the bus that was blown up near the pyramids a couple of weeks ago? There is no way I would ever go to Egypt. Ever. Its just not worth the risk.
Terrorism can happen all over the world, anywhere, anytime. That is the point of it. And you can’t deem a place unsafe forever because of any horrific, cowardly incident. I mean would you apply the same principle to London? Manchester? Paris? All have had terrorist attacks in recent memory. The truth is the risk is always there but is always very low, too low to allow these cowards to win and stop travelling. I was in almost that exact spot the bus blew up in Cairo just a few weeks previous, filming. And I would go back again tomorrow. Terrorists will never stop me from travelling.

Hi Amit, it completely depends what you want to do and where you want to stay. If you check out my destination guide to Egypt that will give you a fairly detailed breakdown of costs but in general terms it is a great budget destination.
I was in Cairo late last year and it is not safe at all. I saw SO much crime. It’s like a normal occurrence. Egypt is not safe, and I have recommended everyone I know to not go as well. I was constantly being targeted for scams and cheaters. It leaves you feeling frustrated and constantly on guard. You would think now would be a cheap time to visit Egypt, however the Egyptian response to lower tourist numbers is to just up the scams and rip off the tourists that do come even more.
Well it is a shame you think that way Carol, I was there in January and February this year, and have been many, many times over the years (including during the revolution itself) and have honestly not witnessed any crime at all. Touts trying to overcharge tourists sure, but that hardly makes Egypt unsafe does it? Dealing with the touts can be frustrating at times I grant you, especially if you are tired or have had a long day, but it is hardly putting you in danger. I mean crime and other terrible things do happen in Egypt sure, but not at a particularly high rate compared to most Western countries, and not at a rate that reasonable safety precautions can’t mitigate.
Talk about being overly scared for no good reason, as Bemused Backpacker says in the video stop focusing on the scaremongering of isolated events in the media.
Absolute rubbish. I was just in Egypt a couple of months ago as a young woman on my own and I never felt unsafe once. I never saw any crime and apart from a few pushy vendors (which doesn’t exactly equate to danger) never had any problems at all.
I’m leaving for Egypt in August and am travelling with my boyfriend and daughter. I have always loved your advice on how to travel independently and think your site is amazing! Move over LP, you really are the new backpacker bible! But this time I am worried to venture out on our own outside of the hotel. I agree completely with what you are saying in the video, it makes absolutely logical sense, but I can’t get that bombing in December out of my head and the constant scamming. All these thoughts are so scary. I’m just looking for some feedback on my anxiety. I should feel excited about going but I’m super worried.
Aww thanks so much Maggie I am really happy you love the site! I get your worries, I really do. Especially if you are travelling with your daughter, that would focus those fears even more for anyone, I get that. But you have to put them in perspective too. Terrible things have happened, but no more so than anywhere else, most people would never say stay away from Manchester or London or NYC because they had one single terrorist incident in months or years of relative safety. Yes there are touts and scams but these can be mitigated and dealt with pretty easily. The hassle can be dealt with pretty easily and at worst is an annoyance if you are having a long day or are tired. That doesn’t mean the place is dangerous. That doesn’t mean you are at risk. For every tout and scammer you meet you will meet even more locals who are friendly, open, genuine and love the fact that you are there. Seriously, use your worries to prepare yourself and take reasonable precautions, but don’t let them turn into fear and make you miss out on a wonderful destination and experience.
Nice video, this message needs to get out there so much more. Egypt is a great country and very safe, yet all you hear from the media is Danger Will Robinson every five minutes!

Egypt is an amazing country, I’m not sure I’d go without a guide though. Our guide really made everything so much easier for us.

I’ve read so many stories about tourists having bad times in Egypt and most of the time it is more about them being uneasy about being hassled rather than being actually unsafe.
No place is perfect but Egypt is not as bad as people think.

I find it a bit weird to talk about how safe it is in Egypt when travel advice says Egypt can be dangerous for women and members of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Except it isn’t though, is it? This travel advice right here is saying that it can be very safe with reasonable precaution.
Try being a woman there.

Have been to much of n.Africa including Egypt with my girlfriend. It was horrendous the way they looked at and hassled her.
Hassled how exactly? That seems like a very generic assumption for the whole of north Africa.
Excellent video. I’ve always heard it was too dangerous to go to Egypt but after this I did some research. Egypt has half the murder rate of America and UK!
