Knowing how to find and choose a decent hostel is an essential skill on your gap year and can mean the difference between an awesome experience and a bad one. Let me show you exactly what you need to know, how to find the right hostel for you, what to look out for and what to avoid when choosing a place to stay on your travels.

Love the video! It is amazing to see and hear you in person! I wanted to ask though do you really not pre book? Aren’t you worried about places being full or not being able to find anywhere?
Thank you Joanne, and no I really don’t. I started travelling when LP was still the bible and all these pre booking sites didn’t exist! So I still use that experience now, and in over 15 years of travel I can count on one hand the amount of places I have researched beforehand and have turned up to find them full. And I would still have a finger to spare! And all I did then was walk next door or down the road to the next guesthouse or hostel which wasn’t in the guidebook and had loads of beds free. 🙂
It sounds wierd but this has calmed a lot of my nerves about my upcoming trip, it makes so much sense thinking of it step by step like that
That is great to hear Lauren thank you. I’m glad it helped.
Excellent tips, thanks for all the advice!
You are very welcome Chris. 🙂
