Climbing Ethiopia’s Ancient Mountain Churches.

In Ethiopia’s desolate northern Tigray region, the unique Gheralta mountains reach out to the heavens, the formidable peaks guarding almost inaccessible ancient churches hewn into the rock itself. Climbing may not be the first thing that comes to mind here, but doing so barefoot alongside the faithful hoping to get closer to God is a spiritual, as well as an adrenaline fuelled adventure.

Making Positive Tourism Count In Lalibela.

Lalibela is a small town in northern Ethiopia that despite being a significant pilgrimage site for Coptic Christians and a UNESCO world heritage site, has yet to be hit by mass tourism. But as travellers wake up to the beauty of this region and start arriving in larger numbers, the local population are already taking steps to make sure that any future influx of tourism has a balanced, positive impact on the local population.

Coffee is as integral to Ethiopian society as tea is in England, and the intricate coffee ceremony is a mark of friendship and respect that is performed all over Ethiopia. So important is the coffee ceremony that it has almost become obligatory to be offered it everywhere as a visitor, and accepting it just as important.
