The language barrier is always a bit of a problem on any gap year, and learning a new foriegn language is not always easy, but as long as you make the effort and try, the language barrier can be overcome in more ways than you can imagine.
Speaking just a little of the local language as you travel and learning as much as you can, even just a few basic phrases of the destinations you visit on your travels will enhance your visit and make sure that you get so much more out of the experience.
