Bemused Backpacker Is One Year Old!

I can barely believe how quickly time has passed as I am writing this, but Bemused Backpacker is now one whole year old!

So much has happened with this website over the last year and I have had such an amazing time with it. The website has grown so much in that time that I can hardly believe how lucky I have been to watch it develop into what is now a burgeoning business!

What I really want to take the time to say though is thank you. Thank you to all my readers out there who have bought and read my books, read my articles and supported me on social media. None of this would have been possible at all if it wasn’t for all of you, and I can’t express how much I appreciate that. Seriously.

So for all of you who have followed me so far, a huge unequivocal thank you. And for those of you who are new, welcome! And thank you to you all too!

What we have accomplished.

As I promised at the start of the year, there are plenty of new and exciting projects in the works to help inspire, advise and assist you on your gap year or backpacking travels and keep you all coming back for more.

My posts are getting more and more traffic every day and my TwitterFacebook and Google Plus pages are getting more and more followers. The Bemused Backpacker travel book series is doing well and growing all the time, with recent additions to the catalogue and even more on the way. I’ve even had the opportunity to connect with some amazing people I never would have met otherwise, and all the emails and comments that I get really do make me think that what I am doing is worth it.

Our partnership with Care For The Wild International was a huge deal for me earlier this year, as their campaigns to conserve and protect wildlife in the travel industry are issues that are really close to my own heart, and this is something that will hopefully continue to grow over the next year and beyond.

You may have also seen a few new features to the website in the last few months such as the new Travel Clinic, which is a free online service that provides qualified, expert medical advice for all your travel health questions and concerns, as well as new additions to the Bemused Backpacker travel guide book series. I am also constantly adding to the tips and destinations sections too to make sure that the website is as helpful and informative as it can be for you.

But that isn’t all, there is still a lot more to come yet!

The next few months will see the revealing of a new section of the website, and the summer will see the realisation of a huge new project that will hopefully push the Bemused Backpacker brand to even dizzier heights.

All very exciting stuff! So I hope you all stay tuned.

Ask Me Anything

Me Egypt

As always, none of this would be possible – or worth doing – without you, the reader.

So in an effort to keep the site as interesting as possible for you, and to make sure I am giving you what you need to inspire you to travel the world and help you do so cheaply, easily and independently, I’m throwing the floor open to you all.

Use the comments section below or the contact me section here to ask me anything you like. Anything at all. Is there anything you would like to know? Ask! Tell me what you like about the site and what you would like to see more of, or even what you don’t like so much. I can use the questions to help the site grow and be as useful as possible for you.

In the meantime, thank you all once again for being the best readers I could have asked for and for supporting me and  helping this site grow. I seriously appreciate it and I hope you’ll stay with me for the next year and beyond!

have a question: i will be traveling solo later this year to several countries where English is not spoken.
have you had any experience with cultural exchange sites to find local guides?

    • Cultural exchange websites? No I haven’t, sorry. In my experience they aren’t really necessary. What is it you are looking for exactly? I and many other backpackers travel constantly to new countries where English is not the first language, learn a few phrases, make the effort and you will get by. If you want a guide for a specific activity, then they are always best hired when you get there through guesthouses, hostels or even tour operators.

Well done on hitting the first year! I’ve only been following a few months but I have learned a lot through reading your posts – I like the variety of your topics but also, best for me, is you touch on wildlife and conservation; I would quite happily read posts about your experiences in this area, like any volunteer projects you have done, as well as generalist topics like wildlife tourism and its’ problems.

Keep up the amazing work, and if you ever stop by London or the south UK, I’ll buy you a coffee!

    • Thanks Rachel, I may just take you up on that! I’m really glad you are finding the site useful. I’ve got a few posts on my experiences (have you read the BAWA post?) As you may know I am really proud to be partnered with Care For The Wild International, and there are definitely more articles on this subject coming up too. 🙂 Thanks for the comment I really appreciate the support.

Hi – echoing the comments above with another massive congratulations! I only discovered your site about 4 months ago but have loved it ever since. Would love to grab some advice on how you approached the various publications who have published your stories as I am just starting out as a travel write? Good luck with year two 🙂

    • Thanks hdwarner, I appreciate the support. 🙂 There aren’t any plans to have a publishing/writing section on the site yet, but if you email me I’ll be glad to offer you what little advice I can?
